What to do when faced with an accident

General

  • Road-users who are involved in an accident, witness it or are aware of it must help the victims or ask for outside help, and also cooperate to avoid greater risks, to re-establish safe traffic conditions and clarify the facts.

In an accident:

  • If you have had an accident with injured persons, call the Guardia Urbana.
  • If there are no injuries and there is no threat to your physical safety, remove the vehicle to re-establish normal traffic conditions.
  • If you are able to take photos (with a camera, mobile phone, etc), do so.
  • Complete the ‘”Part Amistós” (amicable accident report) if all parties are in agreement. This helps to speed up later proceedings.
  • If the other affected party is absent, remember that it is your obligation to communicate your personal particulars, directly or through the authorities.
  • Pass on the details of the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible.

Víctims or relatives

  • If you have any queries or need any information to this respect, do not hesitate to ask the Guardia Urbana.
  • For any posterior administrative formalities, you should get in touch with the Procedures and Information Office (O.I.T) on: Carrer de la Guardia Urbana, 3-5. Tel. 93 291 50 17.
  • If, as a result of the accident (and not for any other reason such as no insurance cover, etc), the Guardia Urbana has had to remove your vehicle, you can get it out of storage free of charge during the following ten days.
  • If you need advice and assistance, you can get in touch with any of the Road Accident Victims and Relatives Associations (Associacions de Víctimes d’Accidents de Trànsit).
  • Explaining your own experience can help other people to avoid similar situations.

Witnesses

  • You should be aware that your cooperation can be very important when it comes to clarifying the facts. Do not hesitate to come forward or phone the Guardia Urbana.
