Try not to accumulate valuables at home. If you have any, make a list indicating their characteristics, make, model and manufacturer’s number. Mark or engrave objects with your ID number to help identify them, if necessary.
Hide any important documents (savings books, cheque books, insurance policies, etc), especially those that bear your signature.
Mistrust unsolicited “service engineers” (water, electricity, gas, telephone, telephone, etc). Ask the service engineer for ID and check by phone with the company supposedly offering the service.
Make sure all windows and doors are properly closed on going out, including those that open onto interior community spaces (patios, terraces, courtyards, etc).
Lock the door even if you’re only going out for a moment.
Never leave notes on the door indicating your absence.
Always control who has copies of the keys to your home.
Change the lock if you lose your keys.
Strengthen the door with security systems: plating, reinforced frames and hinges, spyhole, safety chain, catch, etc.
Try not to leave signs of your absence (dry plants, full letterbox, lowered blinds, etc.) Washing on the line, half-lowered blinds and a programmed lighting timer control are measures that suggest the home is occupied. Ask someone you trust to keep an eye on your home while you are away and leave them a contact number.
Do not mention in front of strangers that you will be away for the weekend or on holiday.
Remember to test and arm the alarm system, if installed, before going away.
Remember to leave valuables and documents in a safe place before leaving.
