This is an ornamental fountain which flows from the head of a stone cat, which was sculpted by Joan Antoni Homs in 1918 and restored in 2002. The fountain is located in the Laribal Gardens which were remodelled by Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier.
The Cat Fountain was one of the many fountains which flowed in Montjuïc and where the traditional meals and popular gatherings for dancing, eating and drinking were held. The Colla de l’Arròs, a group of friends who mixed gatherings with a love for food, boosted this fountain’s popularity at the end of the 19th century.
The journalist and playwright Joan Amich wrote the song “La Marieta de l’ull viu”, which is still sung today and includes this verse: "Baixant de la font del Gat, / una noia, una noia, / baixant de la font del Gat, / una noia amb un soldat...".
