Great Waterfall

Ciutadella Park

The Great Waterfall is an ornamental fountain with a groundwater supply and a recirculation system. It also has a floodlighting system. This historical monument is formed by the waterfall, various ornamental water jets and a bandstand that visitors can access.

It was designed by Josep Fontserè in 1875 as a part of the Ciutadella Park design, and was inaugurated in 1881. Antoni Gaudí worked on it as an assistant, to whom the waterfall stonework and some decorative motifs are attributed.

After it was inaugurated, several sculptural features by various Catalan artists of the late 19th century were added to it. The centrepiece is the Birth of Venus, by Venanci Vallmitjana, and on top of the monument is Aurora’s Quadriga, by Rossend Nobas, who also created the four groups of genii, two fauns and the figure of Eros. There are four gryphons sculpted by Rafael Atché in the lower area.

On each side of the waterfall there are steps leading up to the bandstand, where you get an exceptional view of the park.
