The fountain is formed by a basin thirteen and a half metres in diameter with a pump which allows for two types of water jets, one of seventeen metres and the other of fifteen metres. All around the main spout, eighteen jets complete the water arrangement and there is a bank all around the basin covered with grass to hide the floodlights and the drain for collecting water.
This monumental fountain was built as part of the urban transformation of the intersection of Gran Via with Passeig de Gràcia which took place in 1952, coinciding with the hosting of the International Eucharistic Congress. The project was led by local architect Josep Soteras and was intended to serve as a roundabout to manage the flow of traffic through this intersection.
This fountain has a water recirculation system and its operation is controlled remotely from the Water Cycle Office. It has a lighting system which makes it very pretty at night-time.
